What To Do During a Blizzard (Day-Of Safety Tips)
When the storm is already here, the goal is simple: stay safe, stay warm, and stay informed. These tips focus on what to do right now during severe winter weather.
Storm-Day Rule: If you don’t have to be out, don’t go out. Most blizzard emergencies start with travel.
1) Stay Inside & Off the Roads
Whiteout conditions, icy roads, and stranded vehicles are common during blizzards. Avoid driving unless it is a true emergency.
2) Keep a Safe Exit Path
Snow can pile up quickly and block doors. Clear a path to at least one main exit periodically so you are not trapped inside.
3) Conserve Heat
- Stay in one main living area to keep heat contained.
- Close curtains and blinds to reduce drafts.
- Use towels or blankets to block drafty doors and windows.
- Dress in layers and keep extra blankets accessible.
4) Use Lights & Power Safely
- Use flashlights instead of candles to reduce fire risk.
- Keep phones and portable chargers in one spot so they are easy to find.
- If power goes out, limit opening the refrigerator and freezer to keep food cold longer.
5) Generator & Heating Safety
- Generators must stay outdoors only, far from windows and doors.
- Never use ovens, grills, or outdoor heaters to warm your home.
- Make sure carbon monoxide detectors have working batteries.
6) Watch for Frozen Pipes
- Let faucets drip slightly to reduce freezing risk.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks (especially on exterior walls) to let warm air circulate.
- If you suspect a pipe has frozen, shut off water at the main and contact a professional.
7) Keep Vents Clear
If it’s safe to do so, check that furnace, dryer, and other exterior vents are not blocked by snow buildup. Blocked vents can create dangerous indoor air conditions.
8) Stay Informed & Check on Others
- Keep weather alerts on and monitor local emergency updates.
- Send a quick check-in text or call to neighbors, friends, or family—especially seniors or anyone living alone.
Reminder: If you must go outside to shovel or clear an exit, take breaks, bundle up, and avoid overexertion. Safety first, always.
